The most important thing to know about Matt is that he is a follower of Christ. He came to know Christ as his personal Savior as a young boy while growing up in a Christ centered home. Matt is married to Melissa, and they have three children: Elizabeth, William, and Caroline. His life priorities are his relationship with Christ, his relationship with Melissa, his role as father to his three children, and the ministry God has called him to.
Matt earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Alabama where he majored in Accounting. He earned his Master of Arts Degree in Theological Studies from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. Prior to serving in vocational ministry, Matt worked for Price-Waterhouse Coopers as a financial statement auditor and the Birmingham News Company as a staff accountant.
After answering God’s call on his life to vocational ministry, Matt joined the staff of First Baptist Church, Snellville, Georgia as Assistant Pastor of Administration in September of 1997. Five years later he joined the staff of First Baptist Church, Sugar Hill, Georgia as Associate Pastor. In June 2005 Matt answered God’s call to join Riverbend Baptist Church, Gainesville, Georgia as Senior Pastor. Matt came to Southside Baptist as Senior Pastor in September of 2014.
Matt’s priorities as a pastor are rooted in Scripture: preach God’s Word, model the character of Christ, and lead the congregation to make disciples from every nation, tribe, and tongue. The men Matt most admires in ministry, outside of Christ, are the late Adrian Rogers, James Merritt, and Johnny Hunt. Matt admires Adrian Rogers for his passion to preach God’s Word with simplicity yet with great boldness. He admires James Merritt for his unique gift of personal evangelism, and how every conversation finds its way to the Gospel. Finally Matt admires Johnny Hunt for his incredible love and devotion to the local church, and especially to those who lead the local body of Christ
